Once an institution of pride and unchallenged respect, the Bangladesh Army today finds itself in the humiliating position where any Tom, Dick, or Harry—Ram, Rohim, or Chokkhu Mia—speaks ill of it with impunity. Whispered criticisms have become shamelessly public. Derogatory, obnoxious, and condescending remarks are hurled not only at serving officers but also at retired generals—even four-star commanders. This is a staggering fall from grace.
How did it come to this?
The army’s long entanglement in politics, profiteering, partisan loyalties, and questionable interventions has hollowed out its moral core. The institution, once seen as the guardian of sovereignty, is increasingly perceived as a power broker, a silent enforcer, and, in some cases, a participant in abuses of authority. When the public witnesses trials, prosecutions, and corruption allegations linked to military men, respect erodes.
Who is to blame?
Partly the army itself, for failing to preserve integrity, humility, and professional distance from civilian power games. Partly society, for normalising vulgar abuse instead of demanding reform with dignity. But fundamentally, the rot comes from within—arrogance, greed, and loss of accountability.
Can the army revive its lost reputation?
Yes, but only by shedding arrogance, returning to its constitutional role, embracing transparency, and proving through deeds—not slogans—that it serves the Republic, not regimes or self-interest.
If ignored, history will not remember the stars and medals. It will remember only the collapse of an institution that once stood tall, now dragged into the mud by its own choices.

যে সেনাবাহিনী একসময় গৌরব আর অকুণ্ঠ শ্রদ্ধার প্রতীক ছিল, আজ তারা এমন এক করুণ অবস্থায়—যেখানে যে-কোনো রাম, রহিম বা চোখু মিয়া অবলীলায় কটুক্তি করে। ফিসফিসানির সমালোচনা আজ প্রকাশ্যে পরিণত হয়েছে। কর্মরত কর্মকর্তা থেকে অবসরপ্রাপ্ত জেনারেল, এমনকি চার-তারকা জেনারেলদের বিরুদ্ধেও অবমাননাকর, কটু ও ঔদ্ধত্যপূর্ণ মন্তব্য করা হচ্ছে। এটি এক ভয়াবহ পতনের চিত্র।
কীভাবে এমন হলো?
রাজনীতি, ব্যবসা, দলীয় আনুগত্য আর প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ হস্তক্ষেপে জড়িয়ে সেনাবাহিনী তার নৈতিক দৃঢ়তা হারিয়েছে। যে বাহিনী একদিন ছিল সার্বভৌমত্বের রক্ষক, এখন জনগণের চোখে অনেকসময় ক্ষমতার দালাল, নীরব দমনকারী কিংবা কর্তৃত্বের অপব্যবহারে জড়িত অংশগ্রহণকারী। যখন সেনা কর্মকর্তাদের বিচার, মামলা বা দুর্নীতির খবর প্রকাশ্যে আসে—সম্মান ক্ষয়ে যায়।
দোষ কার?
আংশিকভাবে সেনাবাহিনীর নিজেদের—আত্মম্ভরিতা, লোভ ও জবাবদিহির অভাবে। আংশিকভাবে সমাজের—যারা গঠনমূলক সমালোচনার বদলে কুরুচিপূর্ণ আক্রমণকে স্বাভাবিক করেছে। কিন্তু মূলত এই পচন এসেছে ভেতর থেকেই—অহংকার, স্বার্থপরতা আর কর্তব্যবোধের অবক্ষয় থেকে।
পুনরুদ্ধার কি সম্ভব?
সম্ভব, তবে কেবল তখনই—যদি সেনাবাহিনী অহংকার ত্যাগ করে, সংবিধানসম্মত ভূমিকায় ফিরে আসে, স্বচ্ছতা গ্রহণ করে এবং কাজের মাধ্যমে প্রমাণ করে যে তারা প্রজাতন্ত্রের, কোনো শাসক বা ব্যক্তিস্বার্থের নয়।
অন্যথায় ইতিহাস তার পদক মনে রাখবে না; মনে রাখবে কেবল এক মহৎ প্রতিষ্ঠানের পতন, যাকে টেনে নামিয়েছে তারই ভুল সিদ্ধান্ত ও অবক্ষয়।
