Why Bangladesh must confront the Armed Forces’ role in undermining democracy and sovereignty
For decades, Bangladeshis have been told the same story: “The Army is our pride, the last refuge, the ultimate symbol of sovereignty.” The institution has been wrapped in clichés and myth-making, shielding it from accountability. Whenever atrocities were committed, the same excuse resurfaced—“a few misguided officers”—as if the collective body bore no responsibility.
But history tells another story. From the coups and counter-coups of the 1970s, the assassinations of presidents, the bloodbath of 1977, the authoritarian rule of the 1980s, down to its complicity in the authoritarianism of recent decades, the Armed Forces have been central to Bangladesh’s trauma. Tanks and rifles did not defend democracy; they enforced fear.
Yes, perhaps only 10% of officers directly pulled the triggers, signed the orders, or masterminded the coups. But the remaining 90% stood as bystanders—silent, complicit, beneficiaries of the same system. That silent consent is not innocence. It is participation by omission. Collectively, the institution cannot wriggle out of its dichotomy: professing to be the guardian of the people while holding them hostage again and again.
The Army is not alone. Politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, and even the public have been party to the great betrayal of Bangladesh’s democratic dream. But the military’s claim to moral sanctity—that it is somehow above the corruption and brutality of others—is an insult to truth.

Bangladesh cannot move forward if it continues to treat its Armed Forces as untouchable. A nation cannot heal while its history is rewritten as myth. কিন্তু ইতিহাস ভিন্ন কথা বলে। ১৯৭৫-এর অভ্যুত্থান ও হত্যাকাণ্ড, ১৯৭৭-এর রক্তস্নান, ’৮০-র দশকের সামরিক স্বৈরতন্ত্র, এবং সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে স্বৈরশাসন টিকিয়ে রাখার মদদ—সবকিছুর কেন্দ্রে ছিল সেনাবাহিনী। ট্যাঙ্ক আর বন্দুক গণতন্ত্র রক্ষা করেনি; বরং আতঙ্ক চাপিয়ে দিয়েছে।
হয়তো সরাসরি দায়ী ছিল মাত্র ১০% সেনা সদস্য। কিন্তু বাকি ৯০% বছরের পর বছর নীরব দর্শক হয়ে থেকেছে—কেউ সরাসরি জড়িত, কেউ উপকৃত, কেউ সিস্টেম টিকিয়ে রেখেছে। এই নীরবতা কোনো নির্দোষতা নয়; বরং অপরাধে অঘোষিত অংশীদারিত্ব। সম্মিলিতভাবে প্রতিষ্ঠান দায় এড়িয়ে যেতে পারে না।
অবশ্যই সেনাবাহিনী একা নয়—রাজনীতিবিদ, আমলা, ব্যবসায়ী, এমনকি জনগণের একাংশও এ বিশ্বাসঘাতকতায় শরিক। তবে সেনাবাহিনীর দাবি যে, তারা ‘পবিত্র’, ‘শেষ আশ্রয়স্থল’—এটা আসলে সত্যের প্রতি নির্মম অপমান।
উপসংহার:
বাংলাদেশ কখনোই এগোতে পারবে না যদি সেনাবাহিনীকে দায়মুক্ত ‘অস্পৃশ্য প্রতিষ্ঠান’ হিসেবে ধরে রাখা হয়। মিথ্যা ইতিহাসে রাষ্ট্র সুস্থ হয় না। সেনাবাহিনী রাষ্ট্রকে বাঁচায়নি; বারবার রাষ্ট্রকে শ্বাসরোধ করেছে। সত্যকে স্বীকার করতেই হবে—কারণ জবাবদিহির মাধ্যমেই সার্বভৌমত্ব রক্ষা সম্ভব, আর ভয় ও প্রতারণার সংস্কৃতি ভেঙেই কেবল ১৯৭১-এর স্বপ্ন পুনরুদ্ধার করা যাবে।
